Meet a Saver

Gary Waldron especially hopes his story will inspire young people who feel adrift once they've earned their high school diploma. He spent a year after high school without direction and getting in trouble. He didn't know he was eligible for a Pell Grant for college and that there were other way he could achieve a big goal for his future. Finally taking a good hard look at his life. he decided he would find help to get to college, get a job, and save to buy a car so he could accomplish a busy schedule of school and work. He heard about the individual development account program that could help him with saving for a vehicle and signed up. He took a financial education class and learned about credit and how to negotiate the best deal he could on a reliable used car. "I never saved for anything like that in my life. My friends couldn't believe it when i told them that i was going to pick up my car after I had saved my money for almost a year." Gary is attending classes at Tacoma Community College and will be transferring to University of Washington in the fall. He wants to get a degree in social work so he can work with troubled youth and be a role model for them. His attitude of success is contagious!
